Toothache In Children: When To Take Them To A Pediatric Dentist?

When To Take Them To A Pediatric Dentist?

Toothaches are very common in children. Anything from a tooth eruption to a cavity can cause pain, which children normally find unbearable due to their sensitive nature. As parents, you may be at your wit's end if you do not know what to do when your child has a toothache. Do you call a pediatric dentist? Or do you resort to home remedies?  In this blog, we will talk about some of the simple remedies you can try at home to relieve your child’s toothache and when to take them for a consultation with our pediatric dentists in Dubai.

Look for the root cause

When your child has a toothache, the best way to deal with it is to find the reason for the pain. If your child is old enough to point out or describe his or her pain, start asking them questions. Ask your child where it hurts and when it started. Examine the area they point out. For smaller children, use your finger to gently touch and look for swelling or redness in the gums or cheeks. Most of the time, toothache in children are caused by loose teeth, cavities and in smaller children, teeth eruption.

Rinse with saltwater

Warm salt water is a good antiseptic wash to kill bacteria in and around the infected area of your child’s teeth. Make your child rinse his or her mouth using warm salt water for about 30 seconds and spit it out. For milder toothaches, this is a great remedy for some immediate relief. If the pain returns, take your child to visit our pediatric dentist at the earliest.

Help them floss

Sometimes, children suffer from unexplained toothaches when food particles get stuck in between their teeth. This is mostly seen in toddlers and children wearing braces. As a parent, you can help your child by helping him or her floss between their teeth to take out any remaining food debris. If your child is too young to floss or has serious difficulties to do it, consider investing in a water flosser to help ease the process.

Ice the swelling

If there is visible swelling in your child’s gum, along with the pain, a cold compress can help relieve the pain until you schedule your visit with our pediatric dentist. Wrap some ice around a small towel and apply this to your child’s outer cheek near the swollen area. Repeat it for 10-15 minutes to help numb the pain.

Temporary medications

Although over the counter medications are available to relieve the pain, we suggest parents not to give your children non-prescription medicines. Painkillers like aspirin are very acidic and can cause burns when you rub it on your child’s gums. Ideally, it is best to consult with our pediatric dentists for the best medical solution. In the meantime, you can use clove oil, which is a trusted antimicrobial essential oil to help ease your child’s pain.

Children are more prone to dental infections than adults as they are too young to understand the importance of good oral care habits. But as a parent, you can instill good dental care routines in them, which will help avoid such issues to some extent. However, for optimal oral health in children, bring your child in for appointments with our pediatric dentist every six months after the age of one.
